Adding features to enhance site functionality
The Healthy
Fit Studio blog was created in Wordpress using a custom theme developed to match the existing design and to integrate with sitewide navigation.
Web projects aren't always about graphic design. When Colette Barry first contacted me in 2009, she had an existing Web site that served some of her needs, but she wanted to add enhancements that would improve accessibility and navigation while giving her the ability to share videos and other materials with members.
Instead of redesigning the Healthy Fit Studio site, we kept the existing look and feel, and I edited the layout to enhance information flow, replace an image based menu with a text menu, and created new sections for her member library and blog.
WordPress for Content Management and Blogging
The Healthy Fit Studio member library serves two major functions. It offers a complete archive of all videos and related materials for full members and it provides a space to show live Webinars available to both members and Webinar-only subscribers. I chose to use Wordpress for this area of the site as it gave us the tools to add member authentication, segment the content by member type, and gave Colette an easy way to add new content and integrate her Webinar pages with Ustream Watershed, the service she uses for live streaming the Webinar videos.
Since I work with WordPress on a regular basis I was able to create a custom WordPress theme that matched the existing look and feel of the site, while re-using much of the existing code to reduce costs. When the time came to add the blog, I used the same theme but just included different plug-ins and features to support social media sharing and search engine optimization.
