Barbara,
You're really cranking through the blog! I still use Firefox (currently version 3.6), still love books, have the same phone, rarely text, and am now using a MacBookPro and connecting to the Internet via reasonably high-speed DSL (as I still don't have/need cable.)

I find I watch more and more T.V. online (instead of on the actual T.V.) via sites like Hulu now as that supports my time-shifting preference. As you already know I'm using Google Reader for blog reading. I switched back to that from Bloglines because the former was getting buggy and Google Reader Sharing was a feature I wanted to use. And I'm using Delicious for bookmarking. For some reason it took me awhile to adopt that even though all my nerd friends kept telling me how brilliant it was. That said I've been using it a few years now.

Groups and Usenet have pretty much been replaced by social media in my usage. Twitter was less than a year old when I wrote this. I joined Pownce that summer (a brilliant service that alas didn't last) and Twitter some months later.

I guess I'm still a bit of a Luddite when it comes to mobile technology. I'm using the same phone described above and don't have a data plan with Verizon. Perhaps when they get iPhones I'll consider it. But I'm online almost all the time anyway. If for some reason I'm out in the real world without my computer, then it means I want to focus on chatting with the people I'm with. If I were busy Tweeting on my phone it would mean I was ignoring them, so I don't see the need.

Interesting questions. I'll have to keep this in mind for my 5 yr. anniversary blog post. (Which is coming up quite soon.)

It's been only three years since you wrote this article Heidi. But I am curious to see what and how much has changed within this time of constant new developments, resources and technology. Has your consumption diet changed dramatically? Do you still prefer Firefox? Do you not text? I'd like to know what your diet is these days!

Hi Heidi,

I saw Night at the Museum on the plane as well, and I am also glad I didn't have to pay for headphones. I heard they are making a sequel to it, ehh. I enjoyed reading your list very much. Take care.

The Historian is really a great find. But short for a few favorites I am spending less and less time reading for pleasure and more of my personal "media consumption diet" being based around online applications. Just need to start getting some great novelist to start blogging.LOL

Fran, yes, I did read The Historian. I thought Kostova told a compelling story. And you are right it gave a very different twist to the Dracula tales.

I see you like vampire novels and wondered if you have read "The Historian" and if so what you thought of it. Personally I think it was a class read and a nice twist on the whole Vlad the Impaler thing.

Great idea Dima,
I do try to find a balance. Today I spent some time reading, then went for a 90 minute hike with some friends around a nearby lake. After that we relaxed in the hot sun eating lychees and green grapes. I've decided I prefer grapes.

Alas during the walk I felt compelled to take photos even though I didn't have my camera with me. (I had my phone.) Then after my friends left, I needed to upload the pics to Flickr, and as long as I was online I checked the blog comments.

So perhaps a day without technology is in order. While this one started on the right track, it slowly shifted back online!

Hey!

I am following this "media consumption diet" thread and am trying to suggest an idea of a Commfree Day - one day every month to be spent away from media and information technology. I have a post with more explanation about it and will be glad to hear what you and others think about it: http://thinkmacro.wordpress.com/2007/07/08/commfree-day/

Thanks!

Gretchen,
I've not yet read any Isaac Adamson, but I was pleased to see on Amazon that his main character is from Cleveland! I'll add the Billy Chucka stories to my "to read" list. This weekend after finishing some light mysteries I started Living to Tell the Tale by Gabriel García Márquez.

p.s. re: Moore, I think you'd be most amused by The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove.

I see you mentioned Christopher Moore, have you read Isaac Adamson? (I ask because Christopher Moore quotes are all over the Adamson I currently have out of the library.)
