Greg,
I think you are right that a hybrid approach is best. There are certainly times when a flash animation is the best way to demonstrate something. And of course we all use it regularly to embed video. The trick is to code it correctly and provide sufficient alternative content so that everyone can benefit.

Chris,
great point about the auto-playing. I can't stand it when music or video suddenly starts up on its own. And sometimes that happens by accident. The embed code we're given from some video sites is set to auto-play, so when we include such content we have to make sure we adjust the code accordingly. My friend Steve (@artfuldodga) made a good comment on Twitter about Flash elements "stealing focus." What he means is that if you are happily reading a blog entry, then a video suddenly starts playing on it's own, you are distracted from what you were doing and have to look elsewhere on the page to see what's happening. If you want people to read your content, you certainly don't want to disrupt them in the process. Instead let them click the play button when/if they are ready.

David,
That's so true, what clients think they want isn't always what's best for them. It's very easy to be charmed by a beautiful Flash site. And if you are simply admiring it, rather than experiencing it as a real user trying to learn more about the product or service, it will appear to be much better than it really is. If a client doesn't have experience with usability they won't know where the problems lie, so it's important to educate them as much as possible, so that Flash is used only in the proper context and only when it is the best tool for the job.

Brian
Exactly, if and when we use Flash, we always need to provide some sort of alternative, be that an HTML equivalent site or just sufficient alt text for a Flash element used within a page.

I agree. I two am guilty of putting flash where it doesn't need to be. Although if used correctly it can ad to a site. The best thing to do is script your site so if the user doesnt have flash it will load a static html version of the site.

Thanks for you points on flash designs. I'll add them to my list against flash sites design when I meet a client who can't seem to grip the importance of a User Friendly website.

For me, it's totally obvious why almost 99.9% of my clients shouldn't be using flash on their website. But it's always really hard to get this into their head. They see other competitors with sounds and animations and they want the same.

It's only after the clean site is live, performing and easy to update that they really see why I got on my knees asking them not to go with flash.

Lucky for me I'm at a point in my career where I would refuse a project if the client only wanted flash. Some designer will still do whatever the client asks for...

I hate flash and have a lens about it I also wrote about it on my blog mainly focusing on Gadgets and how they slow everything down. But now I am Glad to see that these sites are not only annoying me but other people as well.Auto playing sounds and video mean CPU and disk usage the people making these should optimise java script and so on.There has been many times I would start to read something but the flash would bug me so much I would just close the site.Great Article

You need to make sure that you emnbed your flash with swfobject or similar that allows you to embed SEO content.

And the other disadvantages of Flash can be overcome by the programmer - for example you can make your site many different pages, retaining forward back functionality of the browser - and XML and other tech can be used to make the site easy to update.

That being said - Flash only if it adds - if you are a boutique site, it can make much sense.

A hybrid approach is often best.

Rob,
That's a great example. I've noticed here in Cleveland that Flash seems to be particularly popular with restaurant sites. I think they like the various ways they can present images of food and decor. But as you point out those are exactly the types of sites people may be perusing while they're out and about with their mobile, rather than at a computer. So the Strip House won and the other restaurant lost.

These restaurants often also lose out on SEO. It seems much easier to find restaurant reviews than the url to the actual restaurant, even when searching for the exact restaurant name. Alas if they're using Flash and don't have much alternative content there's just not much for Google and the others to index.

I love flash, but if it is even done right it could be failing. An example. Last week my wife an I were in Manhattan. She wanted to go a restaurant she had hear about. No problem I thought. I can look up the address, phone number, and even get a peek at the menu using my PDA. She new the domain name. Oops, it was in flash, and my PDA doesn't support that. I use a Treo. I the plus side though, I was able to find a listing for the Strip House on my phone, and their website gave me all the info I needed right on the main page. We had dinner there.
