It’s time to dive in with both paws

Now that you’ve got your new site and had some training it’s time to dive in. Here are a few things to remember.

Do

  • Update your pages as needed.
  • Add pages as needed then add them to your menu.
  • Blog as often as you can. Daily would be brilliant. Weekly would be super. But monthly will suffice. Categorize and tag your posts.
  • Add at least one another person from your organization as an admin level user.
  • Share your stories on social media. Listen to and interact with your followers.
  • Check Google Analytics monthly. You don’t need to check it every day.
  • Update WordPress and Plugins when necessary.

Don’t

Change your theme. If you switch themes you will lost many of the modifications your teams have made. Some will be retained if you switch back while others won’t be.

Panic if something goes wrong. You’ve got site backups in place. It something isn’t working it can be fixed.

Things your devs should know.

Backup Your Site

Backwpup allows you to schedule regular backsups and save the files to a number of locations including Dropbox.

Stay Secure

Hackers will go after everyone. None of us is immune. Stay more secure by updating WordPress when required and by using Wordfence. It can alert you to potential problems.

Keep Track of Your Visitors

Google Analytics offers oodles of tracking data. Learn how many visitors you get per day, where they came from, where they were referred from, what pages they visit and more. Google Analytics for WordPress  by Monster INsights is a good plugin for this.

Search Engine Optimization

Make your site more findable via search. Use Yoast SEO. To learn more about SEO read the Beginners Guide to SEO.

Content Curation: When you don’t have time to write, share the wisdom of others.

You have a small staff and a brand new shiny Web site. You’ve got great ideas on things you want to share on your blog, but you don’t always have time to write a full post. You’ve also noticed that other bloggers and media outlets are writing great things that would be of interest to your target audience. Now is the time to take advantage of such opportunities.

When you find a great post, share it on your blog. If you write a short blurb explaining why the article is important, you can then link to the text of the original article, and your post is done.
